Armando Duarte

Biography

Armando Duarte, holds a BS degree in Physical Education from the University of São Paulo and an MFA degree in Choreography and Performance from NYU (Tisch School of the Arts). His prolific choreographic career included the creation of 90 original choreographies plus re-staging works for companies and dance programs in the US, Switzerland and Brazil. As an educator he has taught all levels of dance artists from beginners to professionals. Including working with some of the most important Brazilian Dance Companies such as, the São Paulo Companhia de Dança, the Bale da Cidade de São Paulo, the Escola do Teatro Bolshoi do Brasil among others and the São Paulo Escola de Dança. 

His academic research involves an investigation on the Brazilian popular culture of samba and carnival, for what he created theoretical and practice-based courses at the UI (Brazilian Culture and Carnival, and Brazilian Social Dance, the Samba), and also led groups of UI students to study abroad in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil.

He has presented lectures on the subject at Universities and participated in Conferences in the US as well as abroad, including the American Popular Culture Association Conference, American Portuguese Studies Association, the Conference of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) and at the International Samba Congress. At the UI, he has been recently awarded with the Obermann Fellow for the AY 2023/2024; and, recognized with the prestigious International Teaching Engagement Awards from the UI College of Liberal Arts and International Program for his teaching and research involvement in international education for UI students. 

At the UI he has served as a committee member for the presidential search; a co-chair of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Strategic Planning Committee; a co-chair of the Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Charter Committee; and a member of the CLAS Executive Committee.
